Hi, I’m Richelle!
A 26-year-old Seattle native turned world traveler and serial China expat.
After studying abroad in both Beijing and Xi’an in my junior year of college, I knew I wasn’t done with Asia quite yet. With no job or boyfriend holding me back, I hopped on a plane to rural China where I taught English to 1,000 crazy high school students. After that, I got my master’s degree at a British university in China. Now I’ve been working as a college counselor in Beijing for the last two years!
I’m a coffee addict and I’m obsessed with spicy food. In my spare time, I love scuba diving, salsa dancing, and trying weird foods no one else will eat.
Somewhere along the way, I went from a girl who was afraid to stay in a hostel in Seoul by herself to a woman who doesn’t bat an eye backpacking around Southeast Asia alone. I was petrified to study abroad in China for seven months. If you had told me back then that I’d still be living in China today, I would’ve laughed in your face.
Now I’ve been living and working in China for over four years. I’ve taught four-year-olds colors and adults business English. I’ve worked with students one-on-one to prep them for college interviews to Princeton and Yale, and I’ve taught giant classes of 50-students who could barely speak English.
Most people back home have no idea what I’m doing with my life. I’m that weirdo girl who still lives in China and travels way too much. My life isn’t always rainbows and butterflies over here in the PRC, but at least it’s always interesting.
About Chalkboards & Chopsticks
After over four years of living and working in China, I started Chalkboards & Chopsticks to help people achieve their teach abroad goals. I’ve taken all of the questions I receive on a daily basis and put them together into one website for all of you! Basically, I created the resource I wished I had when I was moving to China.
After five (five?!) years of writing and blogging at Adventures Around Asia, my off-the-beaten-path Asia travel blog, I realized I had a passion for helping people teach abroad. I wanted to create a focused resource for those of you who want to live and work in China, where you can easily find all of the information you could ever want or need.
While Adventures Around Asia contains plenty of awesome China travel and lifestyle info, Chalkboards and Chopsticks is the place to go for all of your China teach abroad needs!
So Are You a Recruiter or a Blog or What?
I know, it’s confusing. What is this website?!
A blog? A recruiting website? A place to find teach abroad jobs? A TEFL course site?
Chalkboards & Chopsticks is simply an awesome resource to give you all of the information you could ever want about teaching abroad (and surviving) in China. I’ve got plenty of blog posts filled with information to help you. I also have a few connections to awesome schools, companies, and recruiters I can put you in touch with. Finally, I have a pretty awesome FREE mini course that will get you prepare to teach abroad.
Just like my travel blog Adventures Around Asia, I only give you quality information and connections I actually believe in. I’ve been living and working in China for such a long time, I just want you all to feel prepared and learn from my mistakes.
